I’ve studied this psychology. I’ve lived it. And the hardest truth I’ve learned is this: you cannot change people. You can only change how you move through the world. Adaptation keeps you alive. Commentary—naming what’s happening without internalizing it—keeps you sane.

Black women and women of color experience this scrutiny most intensely. Our competence is questioned. Our motives are dissected. Our authority is treated as suspicious. The forms vary by culture, but the dynamic is constant. We are examined not to understand us, but to contain us.

What unsettles people most is not that we understand power—it’s that we are no longer pretending not to.

I see the board. I’ve always seen it. And once you see it, you stop mistaking politeness for safety and aggression for strength. You learn when to speak, when to withhold, when to move, and when to let someone underestimate you long enough to expose themselves.

Power isn’t about domination. It’s about leverage. Timing. Precision.

That kind of power doesn’t announce itself.

It works quietly. And it lasts.

The files also include journal entries from one victim, written when she was 16. She describes being treated as Epstein’s “property.” She describes a traumatic miscarriage and writes:

“So sorry Jeffrey these things happen when your body had never been given time to properly heal! So it came out in the toilet and I didn’t know what to do so I just flushed the tiny little foetus. You have made me numb and I hate you for this! I hope I never have to see you again! I am not your personal incubator!”

Read that again. She was 16 years old. Pregnant. Traumatized. Treated as an incubator.

And Epstein’s response to this, according to the files, was to continue abusing her.

This isn’t about “sex work” or “prostitution”—the language that was used to minimize what happened. This is about child sex trafficking. Full stop.

IV. The 2008 Plea Deal (Or: How Justice Failed)

By 2007, federal prosecutors had everything they needed.

They had testimony from over 30 victims. They had a 53-page draft indictment. They had evidence that Epstein had been trafficking minors for years. They were ready to charge him with 60 federal counts and to charge three of his assistants as co-conspirators.

And then, in September 2007, they signed a secret non-prosecution agreement.

The deal gave Epstein federal immunity in exchange for pleading guilty to two state charges of solicitation of prostitution. His sentence: 18 months in county jail.

He served 13 months. And for 12 hours a day, six days a week, he was allowed to leave jail on “work release”—a privilege that was supposed to be reserved for non-violent offenders and explicitly prohibited for sex offenders.

Epstein spent those 13 months in a private wing of the Palm Beach County Stockade. His cell door was left unlocked. He had access to a private attorney room with a television.

When he was released in July 2009, he was a registered sex offender. But his co-conspirators—Maxwell, his assistants, the people who recruited the girls, the people who scheduled the “appointments”—faced zero charges.

The non-prosecution agreement granted them immunity too.

In 2019, a federal judge ruled that the plea deal violated the Crime Victims’ Rights Act because prosecutors kept it secret from the victims. An appeals court later called it “a national disgrace.”

But by then, the damage was done. Epstein had a decade of freedom between his 2009 release and his 2019 arrest. And during that decade, he continued to associate with some of the most powerful people in the world.

V. The Names

Because it’s one thing to know, in the abstract, that “powerful people” were connected to Epstein. It’s another thing to see the names, read the emails, look at the flight logs.

Donald Trump
Thousands of references. Photos from the 1990s and early 2000s. Mar-a-Lago parties. Documented flights on Epstein’s private jet (at least eight times, according to newly released logs). One log entry shows Trump, Epstein, and a 20-year-old woman as the only passengers on a flight.

Trump’s 2002 quote about Epstein is in the files: “I’ve known Jeff for fifteen years. Terrific guy. He’s a lot of fun to be with. It is even said that he likes beautiful women as much as I do, and many of them are on the younger side.”

Trump has claimed he “was not a fan” of Epstein after learning about his crimes and that he banned him from Mar-a-Lago around 2007. But the files also show that Trump’s public statements about not being close to Epstein don’t match the volume of documented social interactions.

Importantly: There is no evidence in the files that Trump participated in Epstein’s crimes. The DOJ explicitly stated that some allegations circulating online about Trump and Epstein were “unfounded and false.”

But the social proximity is undeniable. And that proximity didn’t stop Trump from being elected president. Twice.

Bill Clinton
Multiple photos. Flight logs showing trips to Africa, Asia, and Europe on Epstein’s plane (the infamous “Lolita Express”). Photos from those trips show Clinton on Epstein’s jet, swimming with Ghislaine Maxwell, in a jacuzzi with young women.

Clinton’s spokesperson has said he knew nothing about Epstein’s crimes and cut ties after learning about them. But the trips happened. The photos exist.

And like Trump, Clinton’s association with Epstein—however distant or social it may have been—didn’t derail his post-presidency influence and status.

Prince Andrew
The files contain extensive documentation of Andrew’s relationship with Epstein—emails, flight logs, photographs. Virginia Giuffre, one of Epstein’s victims, has long alleged that she was trafficked to Andrew when she was 17. A now-infamous photo shows Andrew with his arm around Giuffre’s waist, with Maxwell standing beside them.

Andrew has denied Giuffre’s allegations. He settled her civil lawsuit in 2022 for an undisclosed sum. In October 2025, King Charles III stripped Andrew of all his royal titles.

But here’s what matters: Even after Andrew’s ties to Epstein became public, even after Giuffre’s allegations were widely reported, Andrew remained part of the royal family for years. It took sustained pressure—and the threat of further legal exposure—for the monarchy to act.

Elon Musk
The files include emails from 2012 in which Musk inquired about visiting Epstein’s private island. One email reads: “Which day/night will have the biggest party on your island?” Another mentions logistics for Musk and his then-wife Talulah Riley to take a helicopter to the island.

Musk has said he declined the island visit and that he had minimal contact with Epstein. After the files were released, Musk tweeted a warning that emails could be “deliberately misinterpreted to smear people.”

No allegations of criminal conduct have been made against Musk related to Epstein. But the emails exist. And Musk’s public denials of a relationship with Epstein don’t align with the documented correspondence.

Bill Gates
Documented meetings with Epstein post-2008 (after Epstein’s conviction). Reports suggest Gates sought Epstein’s assistance with philanthropic ventures and possibly a Nobel Prize nomination.

Gates has acknowledged meeting with Epstein and later called it “a huge mistake.” But the meetings happened. And they happened years after Epstein was a registered sex offender.

Others
The files also reference:

• Steve Tisch (owner of the New York Giants, documented emails seeking Epstein’s help procuring women for sex—years after Epstein’s conviction)

• Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick (documented interactions; Lutnick has claimed he found Epstein “gross” and avoided him)

• Former Obama White House counsel Kathy Ruemmler

• Trump’s Federal Reserve chair pick Kevin Warsh

• Steve Bannon

Many of these associations are social or professional—dinners, flights, emails about business or philanthropy. But the sheer volume of connections is staggering.

And here’s the question that haunts the files: How many of these men knew what Epstein was doing? And how many didn’t care?

VI. What the Files Don’t Prove (But What They Suggest)

Let’s be precise about what the Epstein files do and don’t show.

What they prove:

• Epstein sexually abused dozens of minor girls over decades.

• He operated a sophisticated trafficking network with help from accomplices.

• Dozens of powerful men maintained social, professional, or financial relationships with Epstein—many of which continued even after his 2008 conviction.

• The justice system gave Epstein a sweetheart deal that protected him and his co-conspirators.

What they don’t prove:

• That every person named in the files participated in or knew about Epstein’s crimes.

• That social proximity equals criminal complicity.

• That everyone who flew on Epstein’s plane or attended his parties was involved in abuse.

The DOJ has been clear: Some allegations circulating about individuals in the files are unsubstantiated or false. Context matters. Timing matters. Documentation matters.

But here’s what the files suggest—and this is where it gets uncomfortable:

Epstein’s behavior wasn’t a secret.

Not to everyone, obviously. But to enough people. Enough that he could operate openly for years. Enough that he could recruit victims from high schools. Enough that his assistants knew. His pilots knew. His household staff knew.

And if they knew, it’s hard to believe that none of the powerful men who spent significant time with him had any idea.

Maybe they didn’t know the full extent. Maybe they convinced themselves it was consensual. Maybe they didn’t ask questions because they didn’t want to know the answers.

But ignorance—willful or otherwise—is also a choice.

VII. The Intelligence Angle

In 2020, Alexander Acosta—the U.S. Attorney who signed Epstein’s 2008 non-prosecution agreement—was asked why he gave Epstein such a lenient deal.

His response: “I was told Epstein ‘belonged to intelligence’ and to leave it alone.”

Belonged to intelligence.

Acosta has never clarified what that means. He’s never said which intelligence agency. He’s never explained how he was told or by whom.

And the DOJ has never investigated this claim.

So we’re left with questions:

• Was Epstein an asset for U.S. intelligence agencies?

• Was his operation a blackmail scheme—using underage girls to compromise powerful men and gather leverage?

• If so, was the 2008 plea deal designed to protect not just Epstein, but the intelligence operation itself?

Bill Clinton, a man photographed on Epstein’s plane with young women, remains a celebrated elder statesman.

Prince Andrew, a man accused by an Epstein victim and forced to settle a lawsuit, lived as royalty for years before being stripped of his titles—and even then, only after immense public pressure.

Elon Musk, a man whose emails show he inquired about Epstein’s island parties, was handed extraordinary power by Trump in 2025 to oversee federal spending.

And the justice system? It gave Epstein 13 months in cushy jail with work release. It gave his co-conspirators immunity. It has declined to pursue further charges despite a mountain of evidence.

This is the shadow that hangs over 2025.

It’s not just about one predator. It’s about a system that protects predators when they’re useful, powerful, or connected.

It’s about a culture that sees 14-year-old girls as less important than the men who abuse them.

Matt Gaetz — Nearly Attorney General

In November 2024, Trump announced Matt Gaetz as his pick for Attorney General. The nation’s top law enforcement officer. The person responsible for prosecuting federal crimes, including sex trafficking.

Here’s what was publicly known about Gaetz at that moment:

• The Department of Justice had investigated him for allegedly having sex with a 17-year-old girl and paying for her to travel across state lines (which would constitute sex trafficking of a minor under federal law).

• The investigation lasted from 2020 to 2023. While the DOJ ultimately declined to file charges, the case was never officially closed due to “insufficient evidence”—it simply ended without prosecution.

• The House Ethics Committee had an ongoing investigation into the same allegations, plus additional claims that Gaetz had shown nude photos of women he’d slept with to colleagues on the House floor.

• After Trump announced Gaetz’s nomination, news broke of a second alleged sexual encounter with a minor—this time a 17-year-old at a party in 2017.

Gaetz withdrew his nomination within days. Not because Trump rescinded it. Because even Republican senators signaled they couldn’t confirm him without triggering a public relations disaster.

But here’s what matters: Trump picked him anyway. Knowing all of this. The message wasn’t subtle. It was: If you’re loyal to me, your past doesn’t matter. Even if that past involves credible accusations of statutory rape.

Pete Hegseth — Secretary of Defense

Trump’s pick to run the Pentagon—the largest military force in the world, responsible for 1.3 million active-duty personnel—came with his own set of allegations.

In 2017, a woman accused Hegseth of sexually assaulting her in a hotel room after a Republican women’s conference in Monterey, California. She filed a police report. Hegseth’s attorney acknowledged that a sexual encounter occurred but claimed it was consensual. Hegseth later paid the woman a confidential settlement—reportedly around $50,000—in exchange for her silence and agreement not to pursue charges.

Hegseth also faced accusations of workplace misconduct during his time at Fox News and as head of the veterans’ advocacy group Concerned Veterans for America. Multiple sources described a pattern of heavy drinking, aggressive behavior toward female colleagues, and inappropriate sexual advances.

Despite this, Hegseth was confirmed as Secretary of Defense in January 2025 after a contentious Senate vote. The White House dismissed the allegations as “politically motivated attacks.”

Elon Musk — “Efficiency Czar”

Musk wasn’t technically a Cabinet member, but Trump appointed him to lead a newly created “Department of Government Efficiency” with sweeping authority to recommend federal budget cuts and restructuring.

In 2022, Business Insider reported that Musk had exposed himself to a SpaceX flight attendant during a private flight in 2016. According to the report, the attendant was giving Musk a massage when he exposed his erect penis, touched her, and offered to buy her a horse in exchange for an “erotic massage.” SpaceX later paid the woman $250,000 to settle her complaint.

Musk denied the allegation, calling it a “politically motivated hit piece” timed to undermine him. But he never denied the settlement payment.

None of this disqualified Musk from being handed extraordinary power over federal spending and workforce decisions.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. — Secretary of Health and Human Services

Trump’s pick to oversee the nation’s public health apparatus came with an allegation that had been largely buried until late 2024.

In 1998, Eliza Cooney, who had worked as a babysitter for the Kennedy family, alleged that RFK Jr. sexually assaulted her when she was 16 years old. The allegation resurfaced in a 2024 Vanity Fair article. Cooney described an incident in which Kennedy groped her in the family’s kitchen.

Kennedy denied the allegation. No charges were ever filed. The statute of limitations had long since expired.

But here’s what’s undeniable: Trump elevated Kennedy to lead HHS knowing that a credible allegation of assaulting a minor was on the record. And Kennedy was confirmed in January 2025.

Linda McMahon — Secretary of Education

McMahon, a longtime Trump ally and former WWE executive, was named in a lawsuit filed in October 2024 by five plaintiffs who accused her and her husband, Vince McMahon, of knowingly allowing a WWE ringside announcer to sexually abuse children—some as young as 12—during the 1980s and 1990s.

The lawsuit alleges that the McMahons were aware of credible complaints against the announcer but took no action, allowing the abuse to continue for years.

McMahon called the allegations “baseless” and “scurrilous lies.” The case is ongoing.

Trump nominated her anyway. She was confirmed as Secretary of Education in January 2025.

III. What This Roster Tells Us

Let’s be clear about what we’re looking at.

Trump assembled a leadership team where:

• The nearly-appointed Attorney General was under investigation for sex trafficking of a minor.

6. Sponsorships: Even after being demonetized or banned, many of these creators find sponsors willing to pay them directly—VPN services, online casinos, shady investment platforms.

The key insight is this: male grievance is infinitely monetizable.

A response to , who asked the question most people avoid.

She is a woman after my own heart.

Not because I agree with every conclusion she reaches, but because she asks the questions most people are afraid to sit with long enough to be changed by them.

The questions she asks are deep. Complex. And if I’m honest, they leave me feeling a little exposed—because they press exactly where the fault lines already exist. Especially this one:

Is the love you want big enough to hold your entire Black identity? Or would you have to shrink to fit inside it?

That question deserves a real answer. Not a slogan. Not a defense. Not a performance of loyalty.

So here’s mine.

I come to this conversation as an Afro-Latina. Which means I come from a lineage where Blackness has never existed in isolation.

For every Black person in my family, there is a white one. And an Indigenous one. And often all three living under the same roof, sharing the same last name, arguing over the same table.

To people unfamiliar with Latin American history, that can look like contradiction. Or dilution. Or confusion.
But it isn’t.

It is colonialism. It is colorism. It is racism—yes—but racism that competes viciously with every other “ism” at the same time.

Classism. Feminism. Masculinism. A very specific, very old form of Spanish racism shaped by empire, Catholicism, and caste.

Add to that the long history of Black—especially North African—intermixing across the Spanish-speaking world, and you get something different from the Black American experience.

Not easier. Not cleaner. Just… different.

There has always been a kind of permeability around race in my world—especially for women who are beautiful, educated, and come from families with social standing.

I dated men of many races without anyone batting an eye. Not because racism didn’t exist—but because beauty, pedigree, and proximity to power softened its teeth.

That’s an uncomfortable truth. But it’s still the truth.

My long-term partner comes from a different part of the world entirely. He is not white. I am not white.

And yet race—like money, like gender roles, like ambition—became another item in the long list of adult negotiations that real relationships require.

So let me answer the question plainly:
Does my relationship allow for all of my Blackness?
Yes. It does.

But not for the reason people like to romanticize.

It allows for my Blackness because he has enough resources—financial, social, cultural—to give zero fucks about defending himself against proximity to it.

And I have enough other attributes—beauty, education, charm, status—that my Blackness is not the first thing he has to negotiate with the world.

That is not a moral victory. It is a material reality.

And it forces a harder question underneath the one she asked:
If I were not Latina— If I were not read as “exotic” in a way that is both a burden and a benefit— If I came from another part of the diaspora without that particular ambiguity— Where would I be?
Where would my Blackness land?
Would it still be held so easily?

Or would it suddenly feel like something to manage, soften, explain, or survive?
I honestly don’t know.

And that uncertainty is precisely why her question matters.

Because Black love in America is not just about romance. It is about safety. It is about rest. It is about whether you are allowed to exist fully—or only conditionally.

Some of us are loved without shrinking because we bring enough insulation with us to absorb the impact.

Others are asked—explicitly or not—to make themselves smaller so the relationship can function.

And that difference is not about individual virtue. It is about history. Power. And which forms of Blackness the world has decided are tolerable.

So when people react to Venus. To Serena. To icons raised on Black resistance choosing partners outside the race—They are not reacting to whiteness.

They are reacting to a fear older than the internet:
If even women raised on Black pride, Black protection, and Black legacy did not find safety inside Black love… what does that mean for the rest of us?

That fear isn’t irrational. It’s inherited.

And answering it requires more honesty than slogans about “love is love” will ever provide. Because love that fractures you is not love.

But neither is love that only works because you are insulated from the cost of being fully seen.

And that tension—right there—is where the real conversation begins.

I didn’t leave the corporate world because I failed at it. I left because I succeeded and realized the cost was too high.

I understood the game early. I was good at it. I made money, traveled constantly, sat in rooms most people never enter, and learned how decisions actually get made—who speaks, who waits, who pretends to listen, and who already knows the outcome before the meeting starts.

On paper, I was winning. In reality, I was exhausted in a way that sleep doesn’t fix.

What corporate culture rewards is not intelligence or creativity. It rewards endurance. It rewards compliance disguised as ambition. It rewards people who can survive environments that slowly erode curiosity, intimacy, and freedom—and call that erosion “professionalism.”

I lasted long enough to know exactly what staying would require. And I wasn’t willing to pay that price.

Around the same time, my partner—Mi Rey—was relentlessly encouraging me to stop working.

That detail always makes people uncomfortable, so I’ll say it plainly: men with power often want their women available.

Not because they’re villains, but because availability is a cultural marker of status. If your partner can be found when you want her, travel with you when you ask, and exist primarily in your orbit, that signals something to other men who speak the same language.

Mi Rey is no exception to that conditioning. He never hid it. He also never misunderstood me.

From the beginning, he knew I was not going to be owned. What he hoped for—what he pushed for—was compromise. Maybe fewer hours. Maybe working from home. Maybe something that still looked like “work” but didn’t compete with his expectations of partnership.

What neither of us could pretend away was this: I was suffocating.

I didn’t need another promotion. I didn’t need another title. I didn’t need more proof that I could perform inside a system that was never designed for women like me to be free.

I needed space. I needed time. I needed to stop calibrating my personality to corporate fragility and start listening to myself again.

Writing was the crack in the wall.

It wasn’t immediately profitable. It wasn’t safe. It wasn’t something I could neatly explain at dinner parties. What it was, was mine. And that mattered more than anything else.

There’s a popular fantasy that women like me don’t need money, that we’re “funded” by men and therefore unserious. That fantasy misunderstands both me and Mi Rey. Resources were never the issue. Control was.

I made it clear early: this was not a pet project. This was not something I would dabble in while waiting to be absorbed into someone else’s life. This was work. My work. My voice. My responsibility. If I was going to leave one power structure, it wasn’t to quietly submit to another.

It took time to establish that boundary. It took friction. It took arguments and negotiations that most people never see. But eventually we found a balance that worked—not because one of us won, but because neither of us was pretending.

I left corporate life and built businesses on my own terms. Not one, but several. Writing became the spine, not the hobby. And in return, I gained something far more valuable than prestige: autonomy.

I gained mornings that belonged to me. I gained the ability to think without performance. I gained intimacy that wasn’t constantly interrupted by deadlines designed to impress people I didn’t respect. I gained the freedom to travel because I wanted to, not because my calendar demanded it.

I also gained a deeper partnership. One built on presence instead of proximity. On choice instead of obligation.

People love to ask whether I’m worried about dependence. Whether stepping away from corporate power made me vulnerable. What they’re really asking is whether I gave something up that I can’t get back.

The truth is simpler and harder to accept: I didn’t give up power. I changed its form.

I traded visible power for structural power. Loud power for durable power. A seat at someone else’s table for the freedom to build my own.

And once you’ve tasted that kind of autonomy, there’s no promotion in the world that can lure you back.

Power is one of those words people think they understand because they see it everywhere. Money. Titles. Height. Volume. Visibility. But real power rarely looks like what people expect, and that misunderstanding shapes far more of our world than we like to admit.

One of the earliest lessons I learned—long before I could articulate it cleanly—was that you cannot look at someone and know how much power they hold.

Bodies lie. Accents lie. Softness lies. Even poverty can lie.

Power is contextual. It is relational. It changes depending on geography, culture, and the rules of the room you’re standing in.

Americans, in particular, are bad at reading power. We’re trained to equate it with dominance, size, loudness, and proximity to whiteness. We mistake confidence for authority and visibility for control. That framework collapses the moment you leave the country.

I’ve lived in Asia long enough to have my instincts rewired. I’ve met women barely five feet tall—maybe a hundred pounds soaking wet—who could dismantle entire careers without raising their voices. Women whose authority didn’t need to announce itself because it was embedded in systems, relationships, and unspoken agreements that predated anyone else in the room. If you underestimated them, you paid for it quickly. Quietly. Permanently.

That’s when it became obvious to me that power doesn’t live in the body—it moves through it. And depending on the body it inhabits, it is either magnified or discounted by those watching.

This is where femininity gets misunderstood.

Femininity is often treated as the opposite of power, when in reality it is one of power’s most effective delivery systems. It disarms. It invites projection. It creates access. The problem is not that femininity lacks power; it’s that people refuse to acknowledge it unless it looks masculine enough to be legible.

I’ve spent years watching this dynamic play out in corporate rooms. Women taught to soften themselves so they don’t threaten fragile hierarchies. Women rewarded for agreeableness until the moment competence becomes inconvenient. Women whose authority is tolerated only when it’s framed as service. I understood the rules well enough to win inside them. I also understood them well enough to know they were suffocating me.

On paper, I was successful. I made money. I traveled. I had access. What I didn’t have was freedom. Freedom to think without performance. Freedom to speak without translation. Freedom to exist without calibrating myself to the insecurities of whoever happened to be sitting across the table.

That calibration is something most powerful women learn early. You read the room.

You assess the fragility level. If the person in front of you is insecure, you turn up the agreeableness. You soften the edges. You become palatable. If the person is confident, you let more of yourself show. This isn’t dishonesty. It’s survival.

I’ve studied this psychology. I’ve lived it. I’ve watched it break people who thought authenticity alone would save them. The truth is harsher and more useful: you can’t change people. You can only adapt your behavior. Adaptation is how you survive.

Commentary—naming what’s happening without internalizing it—is how you thrive.

This is especially true for Black women and women of color, who have always been treated as objects of scrutiny. In the United States, that scrutiny is loud and adversarial. In other parts of the world, it’s quieter, more transactional, and sometimes more dangerous. The forms change. The dynamic doesn’t.

What frustrates me most is how often power is mistaken for aggression. How often restraint is misread as weakness. How often women who understand power deeply are accused of being manipulative simply because they refuse to pretend they don’t see the board.

I see the board. I’ve always seen it. And once you see it, you can’t unsee it.

Power isn’t about domination. It’s about leverage. It’s about timing. It’s about knowing when to speak, when to withhold, when to move, and when to let someone underestimate you long enough to make a fatal mistake.

That’s the kind of power I write about. Not the kind that needs applause. The kind that works.
